Its Beginning
Lake Benton Library first opened its doors April 26, 1935 at the city hall and was open only two hours a week. However, the library actually had its beginnings with the Excelsior Federated Women’s Club which began in 1929.

The first books and magazines in the library were donated and collected by the Excelsior Club.

During the early years of the library, it was funded by donations given at silver teas and from monetary gifts. In 1958 the library received funds from the city.

The library joined the Plum Creek Library System October 2, 1989. Through the system, the library can receive large print books, audio and video cassettes, DVD's and song books through reciprocal borrowing with 27 other libraries and three schools on the Plum Creek Library System.

Over 10,000 collection items including books, audiobooks, many magazines, videos and DVD's  for both children and adults are available at the library in addition to computer internet connection.

Additional Library activities include Adult Book Club on the first Monday of every month and Preschool Story Time every Friday at 10:00 AM.

In 2014 Carl and JoAn Burk donated the construction of a patio at the back of the library in memory of Jack Burk, Carl's brother and Lake Benton advocate.
