Wind Rights to Private Land
The growth of Minnesota’s wind industry is a result of legislation requiring certain larger Minnesota utilities to purchase a portion of their energy supply from renewable energy sources, such as wind. Other utilities are voluntarily seeking sources of renewable or "green" energy in response to customer demand.
As a result of the increased interest in wind energy, some landowners may be approached by a developer or utility to purchase "wind rights," allowing the installation of one or more wind generators and an access road to the equipment in exchange for a payment to the landowner.
